The Dayton, Ohio, Region’s manufacturing industry is one of the largest, most highly developed centers in the United States. According to research from the Dayton Region Manufacturers Association, the industry employs 123,892 workers or 14.5% of the area’s workforce. That workforce is supported by the region’s 40 colleges and universities that provide education and job training. In 2014 and 2015, the manufacturing industry invested $2.1 billion in the area (14-county region) by expanding 46 facilities, constructing 15 new facilities, and creating 6,609 jobs. The industry’s growth –especially in aerospace and electronics – is supported by a unique combination of factors: abundant water resources, efficient transportation networks, and a historic knack for innovation.
