The Dayton region is a powerhouse for cutting edge aviation, aerospace and defense technology. First fueled by the original innovators Orville and Wilbur Wright, regional businesses continue to capitalize on access to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base which houses the Air Force Research Laboratory. Wright-Patterson is Ohio’s largest single-site employer with more than 27,000 civilian and military employees. According to the Air Force, the base supports another 34,000 jobs outside the fence among defense contractors, support services and other organizations that support it. That amounts to a $4.3 billion annual economic impact to the Dayton region. Sinclair Community College is helping lead the way in unmanned flight by opening the nation’s first, custom-built unmanned aerial systems (UAS) flying facility. Smaller start-ups are gaining more access to military technology for commercialization purposes. Research institutes at both Wright State University and the University of Dayton.
